Contraception during COVID-19

To try and minimise risk to patients and staff from Covid-19 the national guidelines for some coils and implants have been changed.

There is evidence based on small studies that some contraception is effective for longer than we anticipated, please see the below chart.

TYPE OF CONTRACEPTIONUSUAL LICENSEEXTENDED USE ADVISED
5 year full strength IUS (Mirena/Levosert)5 yearsYes, up to 6 years
3 year IUS (Jaydess) and 5 Year reduced hormone (Kyleena)3 yearsNo – add condoms or progesterone only pill
10 year copper coil10 yearsYes, up to 12 years
5 year copper coil5 yearsNo – add condoms or progesterone only pill
Nexplanon implant3 yearsYes,   up to 4 years

Although the risk of pregnancy during this extended use is thought to be very low it cannot be guaranteed and therefore individual patients may wish to use condoms in addition or a progesterone only pill (please contact us if you would like this pill). The coil or implant should then be then left in place until a safe time for removal.

IF YOU ARE USING YOUR COIL AS PART OF YOUR HRT AND IT HAS EXPIRED YOU MUST TAKE AN ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENT PLEASE CONTACT US.
